Four people were transported to the hospital after this accident. The Ford Escape pictured below went over a curb and crashed into the wall of a Dollar Tree Store near the intersection of U.S. 98N and Griffin Road in Lakeland, Florida on September 3, 2016.
This accident is likely to be one of those cases where the driver mistook the gas pedal for the brake pedal. When this happens, it creates a sudden and unexpected lunge that the driver only presses the wrong pedal farther in an attempt to correct, albeit wrongly. These accidents frequently happen in parking lots as people are in a hurry and make mistakes. This accident caused several thousand dollars worth of physical damage to the building. Section 324.022, Florida Statutes requires that the owner of a vehicle carry at least $10,000 in property damage insurance to cover such incidents or to be able to respond in damages of at least $10,000. If a person is unable to fork out up to $10,000 in the event of a crash for property damage, then you need to carry insurance. Adequate insurance is good to have anyway. If you can afford the policy, I recommend to all of my clients that they carry bodily injury liability limits of at least $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident along with at least $50,000 in property damage and uninsured motorists coverage.
